RISK STRATEGY

TRADING AND RISK POLICY

  • Trading Through the California Power Exchange (PX) Report: a market research paper assessing positioning and viability of PX products relative to market needs and making recommendations for future directions.
  • Trade and Risk Operation Review for a Distributor Report: an operational review of trade, risk and resource planning performed for a distribution utility to facilitate the selection of service options provided and guide the utility in long-term resource planning.

ZE was instrumental in aligning and negotiating the terms of agreement. This power contract was one of the most significant and longest power contracts signed in the region.

VALUE-AT-RISK AND HEDGING

  • Hedging of Power Supply Portfolio: risk evaluations and power supply hedging recommendations for a utility managing a portfolio of natural gas-fired and hydro- generation assets, detailed analysis of natural gas and power forward curves and forward/futures premiums. Value-At-Risk is calculated via parametric method.
  • Hedging of Natural Gas Procurement Portfolio: financial modeling of mid-term natural gas procurement portfolio for a large utility. The model calculates Value-At-Risk (VAR) via Monte-Carlo simulation and allows analysis of various hedging strategies via VAR scenario analysis, and VAR decomposition, effect of hedging costs on ratepayers.
  • Stress Testing of Hedging Strategy: hedging strategy of a natural gas distribution company tested via VAR model based on historical market price simulation and extreme value analysis.

ENERGY MARKETING

  • Energy Marketer for Cities of Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge: ZE was engaged for the cities of Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge as an energy marketer for these three cities in 1996 for a two-year period.
  • IPP Energy Marketer Infrastructure Development: developed the trade, risk and credit risk policies for IPP’s marketing subsidiary.
