STRATEGIC / COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

  • Comparative price outlook for mid-C, COB and the Alberta power pool: addressed the market viability of industrial development in the regions by providing specific jurisdictional overviews to help the client make long-term plant location decisions.
  • Competitive outlook: studied the market viability of industrial development in the region Carolina, Tacoma and Georgia as well as TVA and Entergy to help the client make long-term plant location decisions.
  • Business opportunity optimization study for competitively minded distribution utility marketing affiliate: analyzed a set of products and service opportunities intra and extra regionally.
  • Competition in North America: a multi-client study on competition in North America entitled “Going Beyond FERC Order 2000,” which provided analysis of regulatory developments throughout North America, and specific positioning strategy for clients operating in the US Northeast, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia and California.
  • Perspective on the changing electric industry in North America: provided a generalized overview of regulatory developments in North America in order to facilitate a client's corporate positioning in North America.
  • Overview of the northwest utility business environment: review of the northwest business environment with a focus on a specific utility as a competitive supplier.
  • Transmission study: provided strategic options for integrating new generation into transmission system.
  • Regional transmission study: evaluated strategic value of a transmission system for a transmission owner and provided recommendations for transmission planning and development. Our recommendations facilitated the sale of the client's assets, the development of long-term transmission strategy, and the negotiation of transmission access under alternate terms.
  • Critical transmission issues: examined regional transmission issues and the requirements for both the integration of regional transmission for development of an ISO/RTO and from a project specific basis.

OPERATIONAL AUDITS

  • Utility audit: audited a distribution utility’s resource deployment strategies to capitalize on profitable opportunities for the benefit of municipal ratepayers.
  • IT audit: conducted a detailed assessment of the interaction between various departments, the applications used for different tasks and the information flow within the organization. We recommended a full integration of the client’s applications and information storage into a common back-end. Following the audit, proceeded with implementation.
  • Value of service audit: compared the value of service for a joint action agency versus the procurement of unbundled services through the market by members.
  • Operational audit: identified an organizational behavior and operational gap analysis with respect to trade, risk management, scheduling and dispatch and trade accounting.
  • Transmission review: reviewed a utility’s transmission upgrade requirements in a metro area and developed optimization recommendations allowing for non-transmission options.

BUSINESS CASES AND BUSINESS PLANS

  • Yearly work plans: explored market opportunities and tools for competitive operation, outlined various functional changes and operational tasks the client needed to undergo to achieve their market goals.
  • Business case study: analyzed business potential and market activity, and elements of a business plan for an aggregator of electric power to determine opportunities in the national power market.
  • Business plan: analyzed viability of schedule coordination as a core or supplemental business in the western market for a service aggregator.
